How to Protect Your Mac From Viruses
For Mother’s Day I received a brand new MacBook Pro. It’s gorgeous, sleek, and fast and I want to keep it that way. There is a perception that Macs aren’t susceptible to viruses but they are. In fact, a virus on a Mac is just as debilitating as one on a PC which is why I’m relying on MacKeeper to help me maintain the health of my new computer.
MacKeeper provides a full suite of tools to scan and fix problems on my Mac. I began with a System Scan that helped determine the overall health of my computer. With just one click, I was able to run a scan that displayed all the known problems with my new machine.
The System Scan told me exactly how many issues were affecting the performance of my computer and the amount of disk space was being wasted. Besides looking for junk that was cluttering my machine, it also checked to see if my antivirus and anti-theft features were installed and performed optimization tweaks by searching for updates for outdated applications.
The left hand dashboard of MacKeeper let me know that I needed to install antivirus protection and provided information about the anti-theft service in the event that my computer is ever stolen. As someone who frequently travels, it’s reassuring to know that it includes Anti-Theft. If my computer were ever stolen, I could go to the MacKeeper site, login with my account, go to anti-theft, and report it as stolen.
Anti-Theft works by tracking the computer’s geographic position based on wifi and network details and will take a snapshot of the thief with the Mac’s built in iSight camera. As soon as the thief goes online, MacKeeper would email me the information that I could share with the police in order to recover my stolen computer. Of course, your computer should be password protected so a thief is never able to access your data but we’ll save that issue for a later post.
Other features include a Data Encryptor that hides personal data on the hard drive so a crafty thief or spyware can’t retrieve it from the Finder or Terminal. Data Encryptor allows you to add unlimited files and folders that can be hidden with one click on the Hide Button.
I also appreciate the Undelete option that allows users to recover any files that are accidentally deleted with just one click. There’s also an electronic shredder that functions just like the cross-cut one you have in your home office. Any files dropped on the Shredder will be removed without a trace, making this a highly secure way to dispose of electronic files. The Backup option allows you at add and remove important files that need to be backed up to a secure remote location.
If all of this seems overwhelming, it doesn’t need to be! Let MacKeeper help! Not only is the interface easy to use and understand, but there is 24/7 toll free phone support, live chat, and email support. The Geeks on Demand provide professional technical assistance to help with topics ranging from basic topics to configuring your computer and computer purchasing tips and advice.
