Death of Steve Jobs Brings Facebook Scam
When huge news hits, the scammers are always prepped and ready to take full advantage of the situation. Their entire goal is to entice you to click their link. Once you click, they can run any number of scripts to do damage. Their problem is getting you to click that first time. The more topical and relevant the link seems, the more likely you are to think it is legit (and therefore click). If it’s about getting a free iPad, then you are definitely likely to click. In the wake of the passing away of Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO, the scammers have hit the jackpot with a relevant topic — getting a free iPad!
Unfortunately for all of those iPad owner hopefuls, this is just another Facebook scam. The Facebook link says “In memory of Steve, a company is giving out 50 iPads tonight. R.I.P. Steve Jobs [LINK]“. When you click the link it will bring you to a survey taking site to “qualify you” to win the iPad.
If you have already clicked this link, it’s a good idea to immediately scan your computer with ChicaPC-Shield™. Using the full version of ChicaPC-Shield™ can help protect you — even from yourself — when you fall for things like this by blocking a site that contains malware in real-time. You should also change your Facebook password right away, and check the apps you may have authorized to post to your profile.
At this time we would also like to acknowledge what Steve Jobs has done for the technology industry. He didn’t just create what people wanted. He created a product and told people that they wanted it. Once people had the products in their hands they figured out they couldn’t live without them. He brought mass appeal to complicated technology, and for that we thank him. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
