What is Spam?
In recent years, the word “spam” has resurfaced as a household name. But unlike 20 years ago, the spam of today is not a mysterious canned-meat product. Spam is the term used to describe messages and postings delivered in bulk via electronic messaging systems. Spam generally consists of unscrupulous and questionable content, including get rich quick schemes; illegal prescription advertisements; undesirable adult content; and those infamous bank scams that seek to illegally obtain money and/or personal information under false pretenses (also called Phishing). Individual(s) responsible for sending and/or posting spam messages are referred to as spammers.
There are various types of spam that target Internet newsgroups, blogs, and social media sites; however, the most personally invasive form of spam is that which is delivered to one’s personal email inbox. While most spam is simply annoying, some forms of spam also carry viruses or worms that can hijack a computer and surreptitiously generate and send more spam from the user’s email account without the user’s knowledge.
